Cosmorex is a third-generation coffee roasting business that has been roasting coffee in Canberra since the early 1960’s, and we are proud to be Canberra’s longest standing coffee roaster.

With extensive experience developed over three generations, we have deep and broad knowledge across our team that includes sourcing of Arabica coffee beans, roasting, product development, supply of coffee equipment and barista training.

In our mission to deliver the freshest and finest quality beans in Canberra, the Cosmorex team has continued to create and perfect blends and single origin coffees, with each product showcasing exotic flavours from around the globe; from the smooth and mellow textures of the South Americas, to the earthy flavours of Indonesia and bountiful bouquets of the African continent. And using the magnificent, state-of-the-art Italian Brambati Roaster (aka “The Beast”), our expert roast masters are able to roast an enormous capacity of beans daily while simultaneously having the ability to control every step in the process, right down to individually cupping every batch of beans.

A passion that spans three generations

The Sciannimanca family’s passion for coffee began three generations ago, when Cosimo worked as Sales manager for a Sydney Roaster. Moving with his wife Bruna and children from Sydney to Canberra in 1963 He quickly established a flourishing branch for a Sydney-based coffee company. Within only 13 years of arriving in Australia from Italy, Cosimo had firmly planted and started to grow the coffee roasting industry in Canberra.

In 1985, Cosimo and Bruna’s son, Attilio, and his wife, Anne, were eager to carry on in the family tradition of producing great coffee. It was at this time that the family purchased the Canberra Coffee Centre and the next generation of Sciannimancas began brewing up a myriad of exotic coffee blends for Canberrans each morning. Anne also began producing fresh Italian sauces, pastas and gelatos.

Two years later, Cosimo sold his business and joined Attilio and Anne and at their thriving coffee centre, where they collectively perfected coffee-roasting into an art-form, and established a new business known as Cosmorex Coffee - a wholesale and roasting enterprise. The growth of the business meant the need to move to a larger premise in Fyshwick, where Canberra's coffee afficionados continued to fall under the spell of Attilio's aromatic blends.

In a city renowned for spilling the beans, Cosmorex was no longer Canberra's best-kept secret. The Canberra Coffee Centre morphed into a multi-purpose coffee house, warehouse and coffee education centre in Fyshwick, which today attracts visitors and clients from afar. Along the way, Cosmorex has been bestowed with some of the coffee industry's most prestigious awards in recognition of our product quality (see more in “Coffee awards” section below).

In 2013, Cosmorex embarked on a new chapter under the banner of Bean!Roasters. At Cosmorex, we now like to refer to the Bean!Roasters phase of business as an “experimental phase”.  In 2019, reflecting on three generations of Sciannimanca family experience and passion, we decided that it was time to head back to deep local roots and back to our well-known brand, Cosmorex.

Today, the business is headed by Jess, the daughter of Attilio and Anne, and her husband Jamie. They are supported by a team of passionate, experienced coffee roasters, tasters, baristas, sales representatives and operations specialists. You’ll even find Jess and Jamie’s kids “helping” with the roasting from time to time!
